Federated authenticators - Connectors and protocols

Isuru Uyanage
Hi All,

When federated authenticators are configured, it can be configured using the protocol (SAML/OIDC) or using the connector directly.

If we use Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn etc connectors, how to know what is the protocol is used inside that connector.

Any explanation or providing any reference would be appreciated.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Re: Federated authenticators - Connectors and protocols

Hi Isuru,

Then you need to refer respective IDP's API guide. Can you explain more why do you want to know the underline protocol in the connector? AFAIK  facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn use OAuth2.

Thanks
Godwin

Re: Federated authenticators - Connectors and protocols

Isuru Uyanage
Hi Godwin,

I'm implementing scenario 11 in the doc[1]. Therefore, I need to implement set of Identity Providers configuring corresponding federated authenticators (SAML, OpenID, OIDC, WS-Federation). When the connectors are used, I don't exactly know which protocol is used when configuring the Federated Authenticator since it is not mentioned in the IS Connector docs as well.

Thanks
Isuru

Re: Federated authenticators - Connectors and protocols

Godwin Shrimal
Hi Isuru,

Ok I understand. Connector is an implementation of communicating with IDPs using underline protocol. So document will only explain how to use the connector and not about the complexity of the protocol. I think the best way is to go to the API guide of the particular IDP and check the protocol.

Thanks
Godwin

Re: Federated authenticators - Connectors and protocols

Isuru Uyanage
Hi Godwin,

I think it would be better if we can simply mention the underlying protocol name in connector docs without explaining its further complexities. Else we can provide the reference to respective IDP's API guide. I think the first idea would be better. WDYT?

Thanks
Isuru

Re: Federated authenticators - Connectors and protocols

Hi Isuru,

I hope every connector (authenticator) doc has a link to particular IDP's API portal (I know this is not the API Guide) and explain how to create an application in the IDP. Do you think that's not enough?

Thanks

The doc contains a link to the developer account of the related IDP, so I think there is no place to view the related protocol that is associated with the IDP. So seems like it is worth to add that piece of information to the doc.

Thanks,

When federated authenticators are configured, it can be configured using the protocol (SAML/OIDC) or using the connector directly.

If we use Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn etc connectors, how to know what is the protocol is used inside that connector.

Any explanation or providing any reference would be appreciated.

Re: Federated authenticators - Connectors and protocols

Isuru Uyanage
Hi All,
Thank you for your replies. Since only very few developer accounts mention the protocol and others do not, I think it will be a good idea to update the docs and it will give a clear picture.

Thanks
Isuru

Hi Isuru/ Godwin,
I hope every connector (authenticator) doc has a link to particular IDP's API portal (I know this is not the API Guide) and explain how to create an application in the IDP. Do you think that's not enough?

The doc contains a link to the developer account of the related IDP, so I think there is no place to view the related protocol that is associated with the IDP. So seems like it is worth to add that piece of information to the doc.

Thanks,

Hi Godwin,

I think it would be better if we can simply mention the underlying protocol name in connector docs without explaining its further complexities. Else we can provide the reference to respective IDP's API guide. I think the first idea would be better. WDYT?

Thanks
Isuru

Hi Isuru,

Ok I understand. Connector is an implementation of communicating with IDPs using underline protocol. So document will only explain how to use the connector and not about the complexity of the protocol. I think the best way is to go to the API guide of the particular IDP and check the protocol.

Thanks
Godwin

Thanks
Isuru

Hi Isuru,

Then you need to refer respective IDP's API guide. Can you explain more why do you want to know the underline protocol in the connector? AFAIK  facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn use OAuth2.

Thanks
Godwin

Re: Federated authenticators - Connectors and protocols

Hi Isuru, Godwin, and Hasanthi,

Thank you, for the info.
To ensure I have got the requirement clear: We need to update docs for each connector in [1] and mention the underlying protocol they use?
